L’exposition Parcours de l’île de Gorée permet de mettre en avant le riche patrimoine archéologique de l’île mémoire, a-t-on appris auprès de ses initiateurs. «L’objectif est de diversifier les narratives au¬tour de l’île de Gorée en mettant en avant son riche patrimoine archéologique», a indiqué, samedi, Pr Ibrahima Thiaw, de l’Unité de recherche en ingénierie culturelle et anthropologie (Urica) de l’Ins¬titut fondamental d’Afrique noire (Ifan- Cheikh Anta Diop). Il intervenait lors de l’inauguration de l’exposition «parcours, île de Gorée racontée par l’archéologie». «Le projet est une sorte de démocratisation de l’île qui permet d’offrir des perspectives de longue durée que généralement les textes écrits n’ont pas», a-t-il notamment ajouté.
Il a rappelé que contrairement aux autres sources, l’archéologie a la capacité de pénétrer le temps pour raconter des histoires dépassant le mémoriel ou le texte. Selon lui, il était question de raconter une histoire de Gorée, couvrant la période bien avant la traite des esclaves et son ouverture au monde atlantique et au commerce triangulaire. «C’est une collection d’objets des fouilles que nous avons menées durant la première décennie des années 2000 qui couvrait des sites datant des périodes néolithiques dont l’âge n’a pas été plus au moins contrôlé, mais se situant dans la période avant Jésus-Christ», a-t-il précisé.
«Pendant très longtemps, l’histoire de l’île de Gorée a toujours été racontée par voie orale ou par des textes documentaires, des écrits. Nous, en tant qu’archéologues, nous avons cherché à interroger les objets que les gens qui y ont vécu ont laissé sur place», a-t-il fait savoir.
A partir de ces objectifs, a martelé Pr Thiaw, un récit a été développé dans plusieurs sites, pour sortir du cadre du récit unique de la Maison des esclaves et ouvrir les espaces mémoriels à d’autres sites. «En mettant les panneaux dans différents endroits de l’île, le visiteur pourra être bien renseigné et informé sur comment les autres espaces ont été impliqués dans la vie de l’île», a-t-il expliqué. «Cette initiative vise à améliorer des narratives sur l’île, elle permet de savoir comment arriver à communiquer avec les jeunes, comment transmettre ce savoir, raconter l’histoire, etc.», a quant à elle soutenu la conseillère régionale pour la culture de l’Unesco, Guiomar Alonso. Ce parcours archéologique reste une mémoire liée à une phase tragique de l’histoire de la traite des noirs incarnée par l’île, a-t-elle souligné. «Qu’est-ce que les fouilles archéologiques nous racontent sur l’île depuis des milliers d’années ?
Ce travail en est la réponse», a-t-elle fait savoir. Pour sa part, le directeur du Patrimoine culturel, Omar Badiane, a souligné que ce parcours archéologique fera la promotion des visites touristiques, scientifiques sur l’île. «Nous saluons le fait qu’un laboratoire ait pu travailler sur ces recherches et demandons à la commune de faire en sorte que son environnement socio-professionnel soit dans des meilleures conditions», a-t-il plaidé.
Selon un communiqué de presse, ce projet de valorisation du patrimoine archéologique met l’accent sur l’accueil et les échanges qui pourront être suscités par cette exposition et ce qu’est Gorée. Il s’agit aussi d’un effort de montrer autrement, à travers la culture matérielle, la vie quotidienne sur ce site inscrit sur la liste du patrimoine mondial et offre aux visiteurs une expérience empirique de la trajectoire de l’île sur près de 2000 ans.
