L’ancien chef de la rébellion ivoirienne et candidat à la présidentielle d’octobre 2020 a été condamné à 20 ans de prison pour « recel de détournement de deniers publics » et « blanchiment de capitaux » par le tribunal correctionnel d’Abidjan au terme d’une audience boycottée par ses avocats.
Accusé d’avoir acheté en 2007 sa résidence d’Abidjan avec des fonds publics lorsqu’il était Premier ministre, Guillaume Soro, qui vit en France, a été condamné à « 20 ans d’emprisonnement, 4,5 milliards FCFA d’amendes (6,8 millions d’euros), la confiscation » de sa maison et la privation de droits civiques pour 5 ans. Un nouveau mandat d’arrêt a été émis à l’encontre de l’ancien président de l’Assemblée nationale qui, sauf appel fructueux, se voit ainsi interdire de se présenter à la présidentielle d’octobre.
Le verdict a été prononcé à l’issue d’un procès de quelques heures auquel ont refusé de participer les avocats de l’ancien rebelle. La défense affirme que les accusations portées contre Guillaume Soro, actuellement en exil en Europe, visent avant tout à empêcher l’ancien président de l’Assemblée nationale ivoirienne de participer au scrutin présidentiel.
